Real important piece from Steve Vladeck in his One First newsletter explaining why Justice Jackson ruled as she did. https://open.substack.com/pub/stevevladeck/p/190-snap-wtf?utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=email. Explains how Judge Jackson made the best of a no good solution situation. AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY in advance, Asha! Enjoy celebrating with your kids, and remember the German saying, "Getting older is fate, getting old, a decision. I know you'll stay young!

One of the things we loved at IRS was timeframes and I had a modified Julian calendar to calculate dates to tell taxpayers when things were due. I’ve had to pull up a calendar to look at the shutdown to consider its social effects on the furloughed staff. With one of the senators (Kennedy of Louisiana, I think) stating his view that the shutdown may drag well into 2026, the blast radius of this is only going to increase.

We’ll see the 60 day mark near the end of this month and the 90 day mark at the end of December. Cars will potentially start facing repossessions just after Thanksgiving for the furloughed staff. Mortgages are probably going to be defaulting by Christmas for furloughed staff and by the end of January we’ll see foreclosures kick off. That all assumes these things went unpaid at the start of the shutdown and the odds of that are pretty good.

I could have sworn I voted against dystopia in 2024 yet here we are…

Thank you. I am a first-time reader. I don't know how I ended up here but I find Substack has "mysterious ways." Thank you for allowing comments from an "unpaid person." I wish I could pay at least several of you. I am so in love with Pancake 🥰😼

Love the choice of Marie Antoinette picture. I imagine it's in reference to her apocryphal comment (more alleged than historically proven) of "Qu’ils mangent de la brioche" (let them eat cake); less well known is what Pierre Gaspard Chaumette, the president of the Paris Commune, maintained that Jean Jacques Rousseau said, "Quand le peuple n'aura plus rien à manger, il manger les riches" (When the people shall have nothing more to eat, they will eat the rich). Of note, I found this in Bill Kristol's (BILL. KRISTOL!) newsletter at The Bulwark yesterday in which he wrote, "The current state of American capitalism isn't sustainable." We do indeed live in strange times!

Shutdown, SNAP, and discharge petition update: This relates directly to the discharge petition and needs to be amplified -- If you can help, you could make a difference. On Dec. 2, Tennessee has an election in a R>20 district for Congress. If the R wins (apparently advocates for T 3rd term), and Johnson waits until after that to call the House back, he can negate Grijalva's vote if any R backs out. That district is nationally significant for the Epstein files. SNAP is "just" collateral damage to millions. Thanks for all you do!

I heard that theory for Mikie’s obstruction of the House. Grijalva would still be vote 218 for the discharge petition for Epstein files (majority of 435) so this theory doesn’t hold up. The TN-7 race has a great Dem candidate Aftyn Behn who came within 10pts in the initial runoff so 🤞🤞. Grassroots groundgame for her is very fired up too

Thanks for the note — with the open seats, I was assuming (sigh) that the count was with filled seats, not all seats. Thanks again for the correction.

Asha, I have a strange question about donating money to help. I’m listening to Katie and Steve right now. Can people sue over the lack of SNAP benefits because trump doesn’t have power of the purse? In some ways, that’s why the 2 Chicagoland companies said they are suing over the tarriffs…it’s not just the fact these things cost more to make. It’s very simple-power of the purse.

As experts in law, can you tell me what you think of the legal cases trying to expose election fraud in the 2024 Presidential Election? It seems everyone who cares about democracy would be following the Rockland co New York election fraud case. A legal way to take down this administration and the billionaire backers, is to prove they cheated in the election. I think Democrats are afraid we sound like the MaGa cult when we question the legitimacy of the election. I don’t care how we sound. The truth is still the truth. Newsweek and MSN each had a small article about it.

https://www.newsweek.com/2024-election-lawsuit-advances-2083391

The Substacks of Dissent in Bloom, Smart Elections, and This Will Hold have information that makes sense. And the lawsuit in New York is moving forward, which means there is evidence of fraud.

Also Election Truth Alliance has similar findings in many of the swing states.

This is bigger than Epstein, and will take down more players in this illegal regime, instead of just their mascot Don the Con. The likelihood of the Epstein files seeing the light of day untampered with, is slim. Even if Don gets impeached, we will still have Vance. If Vance gets in, the same 2025 players will be making his decisions for him.

Please use your voice to send this message to the masses. This could make all the difference! Thank you!!

Thanks for everything, Asha. I actually watched you and Renato first thing this morning and found your take on the Comey case fascinating. Also glad that you calmed my anxiety about the Supreme Court ruling which I now understand is just a couple of days granted for a better explanation. One day at a time for sure!
