This is a short roundup because I am headed to an off-year college reunion and taking a much-needed break. BUT, check your email tomorrow for a FREE weekend bonus in advance of our amazing guest speaker on Tuesday!
In the meantime, Renato and I caught up on all the big developments in Trump’s Manhattan trial in this week’s podcast:
My pieces this week:
I was thrilled to join my colleague Tom Joscelyn at Just Security to write about the ramifications of the latest MAGA conspiracy theory that President Biden tried to assassinate Trump
Other pieces worth reading:
Along similar lines to my Just Security piece, Juliette Kayyem writes in The Atlantic about how the “assassination” rhetoric encourages political violence against the government and the FBI
Upcoming events:
NEXT WEEK! Guest Speaker, Jacob Hacker, Tuesday, May 28, 4-5 p.m. EDT. Yale professor and co-author of Let Them Eat Tweets: How the Right Rules in an Age of Extreme Inequality will join us to discuss some of the driving forces behind asymmetrical polarization, a topic we are currently covering in our Substack course. (You can enroll in the course at anytime, and this topic is new — check out the short assignment to jump in!) The talk will be recorded and posted for anyone who can’t make the live event.
Freedom Academy Book Club, Date/Time TBA (likely June/July). I’m very excited that my former CNN colleague, Jim Sciutto, will be joining us to discuss The Return of Great Powers: Russia, China, and the Next World War. I love Jim’s work and insights into national security issues and this is a discussion you won’t want to miss!
Enjoy your long weekend!

Thanks for the pancake! Enjoy your time off 👋
Thanks for the great legal analysis as usual.
Renato, I can relate to your groomer experience. When I took my rescue for his first cut at the groomer, I swear I did not recognize him afterwards! Admittedly, he was overdue for a cut and he was a little matted so he had to get shaved—probably like your cat Asha. Anyway, it did grow back so just have patience. I think Henry is still adorable, if that helps. 🐾❤️🐾
