Thank you for the rebuttal regarding the alleged “cheap shot” comment about Jack Smith’s filing. Really? WTF? You so clearly lay out the facts that the timing was due to Trump’s constant delays & the Supreme Court dragging out their hearing of the case & the much delayed timing of their “clarification” of what is “immunity”. I thought at first that the “cheap shot” was used sarcastically or humorously, but it was used seriously. It still befuddles me.
I have more than a few friends in the IC, who like me, are deeply skeptical of anyone who was ever involved in the New York Southern District. It just seems an odd thing for Honig to weigh in on out of the blue like that. Like it seemed odd for Giuliani and Kallstrom to support Trump, who's been a mob asset, first for the Italians, then the Russians his whole life. And it seems odd everyone involved in taking down the Gambino and Geneoveses, including Rudy Giuliani, James Kallstrom and Elie Honig, have a thing for Trump, who they can't not know is a criminal scumbag and always has been when every taxi driver in Queens knows it.
I think you have to ask yourself who benefitted, besides the people of New York, by breaking the Italian mob's grip on New York? Certainly it made Giuliani and Kallstrom's careers. Interestingly it made Honig's career as well. But it also cleared the field for the Bratva and other eastern European gangs. And there really is no daylight between the Putin government and the Russian mob. Putin's been aligned with them since boyhood.
Giuliani's interesting relationships with RIS agents, Bratva mobsters and Russian interests generally are not particularly unknown at this point. Kallstrom's dead. But now I kinda wanna see Honig's phone logs and emails, say, back to 2010 when he took over the organized crime unit. Because if you do ask yourself who benefitted by the elimination of Italian crime families, and who desperately wants Trump back in the White House, you can't miss noticing those guys aren't Irish. And everyone in Trump's corner inevitably turns up with some interesting Russian relationships. I kinda wonder if Elie has a few.
It’s nice to have a travel budget and I hope you enjoy Bali. I’ll be giving finals Wednesday to my digital literacy students in this half-term and then have to start up with the new half-term the week of the 14th.
My crop of digital literacy students this half-term have been very curious about Trump and digital issues. My digital ethics lecture got exciting at points. I’ve been trying to weave in current events so every new thing in generative AI gets put before them if I have access. They’re starting to understand how misinformation/disinformation has been commodified thanks to AI so that any knucklehead with a high-end ($2k-$3k) gaming computer can cause havoc.
Given how advanced the Dementia has become in the last few weeks, how will the trials work? I don't want the trials dismissed. I'm realistic because he's so far gone. Thanks.
Asha, this comment may seem out of date, but i don’t know where else to ask it, with the advent of the news that Trump spoke with Putin at a minimum of seven (7) times after leaving the White House in 2021 after January 6 and we know now his mar a lago house had Classified NatSecDef documents openly placed for any guest to take photos off, and we know there were at least 2 Russian women posing as people they later were found out were not these same identities, its not a leap to imagine our nations secrets were laid out in lavendar and photographed in a library format with cover sheets shown, brought back to Putin, FSB, whomever, for them to select, “get me copies of Ukr 25, Ukr26, the whole Ukr series, China 72, China 77, China Defense USSR Strat doc, USA USSR entire sries, etc”. And ordering it through trump. Our Fbi (not you, ), our intelligence services sitting back letting all this happen not wanting to be attacked by trump or Biden or both! What a mess!
Thanks for the charts outlining what's happening in the crazy world of Trump prosecutions!!💖
They always help keep things in perspective (without stressing my brain to the point of exhaustion).
I think the 2nd one (with Trump, Eastman, and Meadows at the center) is the best yet, and the artwork is priceless - and effective at keeping my blood pressure in check.
The helpful graphics were a relief from a flat disposition. Although a flat disposition may offer relief in its sheer amassing of evidence upon confirmation of evidence of wrongdoing of the president acting outside of article II, breaking the law to remain in power, acting as a self interested private candidate with contemporaneous notes , and
contemporaneous conversations, and testmony from Pence and others.
Thanks for this informative piece. I think it would be great for you, Elie, and any other legal analyst with a take on the SC's and Chutkan's actions, to have a sit down to hashout your views in a deeper discussion. Maybe as guest(s) on your podcast, or a neutral podcast.
Hearing his take on The Counsel sounded a bit disinegenuous with some the adjectives he used to describe Smith.
Can you conjure any sort of rationale for the decision that:
1) trying to get one's [toady] attorney general to write deceitful letters to the state AGs trying to make them complicit in a crime qualifies for absolute immunity but
2) trying to get your VP to conspire to refuse to certify legitimate votes
Because Trump was giving orders to Clark in his capacity as President speaking to his Acting Attorney General. With Pence, Smith is arguing that they were speaking in their capacity as electoral candidates/running mates, not as President-Vice President.

Thank you very much for pushing back on the hot take of one of your colleagues. I had to quit listening to him sometime ago.
Thank you, Asha, particularly for your informative diagrams. And for all you and Renato do to keep us educated. Enjoy your trip!

does not? They seem kind of similar to me.
