One way that social media platforms have allowed disinformation to take hold is their ability to allow users to "curate" their information sources so that they only hear messages that support their world view. This allows bad actors to target sub-groups and create the "echo chamber" effect.

Yes, filter bubbles definitely allow for "alternate realities" to feel true and also for repetition (and the ability to see "likes" etc., makes it seem as though the information is widely accepted)
